Maryland Horse Council
Committee to Support Racing Meeting

Wednesday, March 2, 2011
6:30 pm

MD Dept. of Agriculture
Lower Level Conference Room
50 Harry S. Truman Pkwy.
Annapolis, MD 21401

Agenda:

MHC Committee to Support Racing Chairman Christy Clagett is calling this meeting as a follow up to the enthusiastic meeting we had last week at the Vista Room at the MD State Fairgrounds to discuss marketing ideas to help promote Maryland racing, both Thoroughbred and Standardbred. We discussed some great ideas, from development of a Save Maryland Racing type of website to sponsoring a 5K or 8K run in conjunction with the Maryland Million, and lots of others things as well. So come equipped with your best ideas. We can prioritize them and decide on a plan of action to start implementing them.

12/15/2010: Back to the Racing Commission ... or the Governor?
                     Next meeting, Tuesday, December 21 @ 12:30pm

The Board of Directors of the Maryland Horse Council passed a resolution in 2004 pledging support for efforts to enhance racing purses with slots at racetracks. Through a grassroots political mobilization we supported the constitutional amendment that voters approved in 2008 legalizing slots at specific locations throughout the state and defining the percentages of slots revenue that would support purse enhancements and racetrack renewal.

Our organization has members within both the Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing industries, and supports efforts to preserve and promote both sports. We applaud Governor O'Malley's recent effort to save Rosecroft Raceway, and we support his recent successful negotiation with MI Developments, Inc. to keep The Preakness in Maryland.

We believe that the whole horse industry in Maryland benefits by having a vibrant racing industry, and we believe that the racing industry benefits by having the support of the whole horse industry. The Maryland Horse Council acts inside of the political and legislative arenas at the county and the state level. The future of racing in Maryland depends in part on the decisions of our elected officials and a failure by our organization to act in racing's best interests would be a failure of the Horse Council to fulfill its mission.
